MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity output increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, compared to 35,935.3 GWh during the same period in 2025. The National Centre for Statistics and Information’s preliminary data indicated growth in several governorates, with about 1,546.5 GWh added to the national total over the first eight months. August’s electricity generation hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the fastest growth, with total electricity output soaring 204.8% from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah saw an increase of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s production grew by 8.4%. Meanwhile, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah all saw a rise of 5.5%. Dhofar also reported growth, with electricity generation climbing 4.6% from January to August. These figures reflected broad expansion across most regions included in the national data.

In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decrease of 16.4% in electricity production. Musandam’s output was 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period of 2025. The regional data revealed significant variation in electricity growth rates across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary, covering electricity output through the end of August 2026.

    Net electricity output increases 4.6%

Oman’s net electricity production grew by 4.6% through August to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This measure includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led the growth, with net production rising 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw a 44.2% increase, while Al Wusta and Dhofar reported gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output increased by approximately 1,592.1 GWh compared to the previous year.

Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a 16.6% decline. Musandam’s net electricity generation was 368.0 GWh, with no meaningful change from the previous year. These regional figures generally followed the pattern seen in total electricity production, with national net output remaining above the levels recorded in the first eight months of 2025.

    Water output drops across Oman

Oman’s water production decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres compared to about 342.71 million cubic metres during the same period in 2025. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decline, producing approximately 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Water output in other governorates fell 3.4% to around 149.90 million cubic metres, down from about 155.19 million during the same months last year.

Dhofar was the only region to buck the national trend, with water production reaching about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, up 3.4% from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. These recent utility figures demonstrate divergent trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026, with electricity output rising at both total and net levels, while overall water production remained below its comparable level in 2025.
