DR Congo Ebola Cases Climb to 8,376

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The latest data from national health authorities shows that the Democratic Republic of the Congo has documented 8,376 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,042 fatalities. This outbreak has become the largest and deadliest Ebola epidemic in the country’s history. By late September, the number of cases had spread across 63 health zones in seven of the nation’s 26 provinces, keeping the outbreak at the forefront of regional public health initiatives.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 8,376 confirmed cases
Health authorities track Ebola transmission across several provinces in DR Congo.

The ongoing epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola that has maintained sustained transmission since the emergency began in May. Congolese authorities declared the outbreak on May 15 after infections emerged in the northeast of the country. Since 1976, this marks the 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ituri remains a primary transmission hub, with cases also appearing in North Kivu and other provinces.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya has issued a warning about the threat posed to neighboring nations. The persistence of transmission and ongoing cross-border movement have prompted regional health authorities to focus on surveillance and preparedness. Uganda previously reported infections linked to the Congolese outbreak before ending its own outbreak in August. Authorities have also monitored cases associated with travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    Risk to the region persists

The World Health Organization has classified the risk within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high, and the risk to neighboring countries with land borders as high as well. Factors such as population movement, informal border crossings, and ongoing transmission are contributing to the increased likelihood of cross-border spread. WHO recommends strengthening surveillance, laboratory capacity, and cross-border coordination instead of implementing unnecessary travel or trade restrictions.

Across affected areas, the Congolese government and health partners are actively engaged in surveillance, testing, contact tracing, patient care, and community outreach. Efforts also focus on protecting health workers and improving access to communities where transmission continues. Operations face challenges in eastern Congo due to insecurity and population movement, with several health zones affected. Public health teams persist in tracking new infections while supporting treatment facilities and local response efforts.

    Global backing supports ongoing efforts

On October 3, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri to reaffirm France’s commitment to the Ebola response. France has allocated 13.4 million euros for Ebola-related initiatives from January to July 2026, covering humanitarian aid, research, and health programs. During his visit, Barrot toured an Ebola treatment center and met with response officials, also indicating that France will seek additional humanitarian funding in upcoming budget discussions.

Currently, there is no specifically approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola, emphasizing the importance of case detection and infection control in the response. Medical countermeasures are under evaluation by health authorities and research partners, while frontline teams continue to isolate cases, trace contacts, and provide supportive care. The outbreak has already exceeded the scale of previous Ebola epidemics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities continue to publish updated case figures as surveillance and laboratory testing reveal new infections.
